Three things Thursday

1. I did not feel like running this morning.

I was tired. It was cold out. It was raining. I just wasn't feeling the running love. My last run was great, but I was still feeling the race euphoria. I don't know if this was a case of post race letdown or what. Often when I feel this way, I'm in the zone within about 30 seconds of running. Not today. Today was a struggle the whole way. I did 5 km (3.1mi) and even in the last couple hundred metres I was feeling like I wanted to stop early.

Having said that, after completing my run, showering, and having breakfast, I feel great. I'm so glad I followed through. It's an important thing to realize that sometimes we love it, but sometimes it's work. Hard work.

2. I need to figure out my strategy for longer distances

Okay runners, talk to me. Do you do use a run/walk strategy? I know a lot of people swear by doing 10 minutes running and 1 walking - even getting better times overall. What works for you? I think I'm going to try 10s and 1s for my longer runs. I'm wondering if it will enable me to push harder when I'm running.

3. My weigh in this week was another disappointment

Okay, I admit it. I've been avoiding posting about this. My weigh in this week was another stable one. I was actually up 0.2 pounds, but personally, I don't count it as up or down unless it's at least half a pound.

I do know some of the reasons and there are things I can do to make this weight move. That does deserve a post of it's own though, so I'll get into it tomorrow.

  1. I think the rain and cold is making everyone feel miserable :( Summer is definitely gone. I've been having a hard time just getting out to take the dog for a walk!! I haven't even thought about running!

Congrats on maintaining your weight!! Especially in a race week! It's so easy to cave to temptation after a race and you obviously didn't. Maintaining is even harder than losing - you should feel good about this! You had a lot of triumphs this week and should focus on that instead.

When I started increasing distances I did 10 & 1's. I needed the break mentally more than anything else. Now I try to run the first half before walking.

    Good luck!!

  2. You mantained your weight after your first race! I usually go out for a big burger and fries and gain weight. Congrats and just start thinking of the next two races you have coming up.

As for longer distances I have no personal experience BUT my aunt and uncle recently ran a marathon. They used a training program that had them do a steady short run, and interval run, and then a long run each week. My uncle had his best time and my aunt said it was her most enjoyable race.

I know fitness mag just had a training plan for a 5K or 10K so you could google and see what else you can find.

  3. That's being a true athlete, Deb, hanging in and on like that.

Although I'm not an athlete, I can relate to the times that I truly have to force myself onto my dreadmill. Just one more quarter mile.....one....more...quarter....miiillllee......

  4. Sounds like you have given thought & have figured out reasons why and what you can do to change it up and get the weight going down. Bravo to you for not sitting idle and hoping for it to just happen. Chnaging things up is key to plateau busting.
